DC Graffiti

June 16 2001  A book and has been published on DC Graffiti. The Book is called Free Agents: A history of Washington D.C. Graffiti and was compiled by Roger Gastman who publishes 'While You Were Sleeping.' Along with the book was a Gallery show at the Museum of Contempirary Art in Washington D.C. The show was really good considering the lack of attention that D.C. graffiti gets in town. There were original works by more than just D.C. artists as well as pictures. The show filled two rooms and had alot of diverse styles from 'wild' to small mural plans. I got the book at the gallery and it's good, lots of color pics and a good history for a scene that is so secretive. Check out the official Free Agent site at www.cooldiscodan.com

Here is a list of News Article links about the book and exhibition.

I am hoping to talk to Roger Gastman about having the Al'kem foundation sponser a digital archive of D.C. graffiti pics and info. More to come.

I have started DC Graffiti as an archive of Graffiti pics in DC to document some of the better artists and murals. Usually pics are the ONLY proof that graffiti murals and tags ever existed. I think this is an important development that the art world has not recognized. Temporary Urban Art. Most art is designed to last and is treated as something to be saved. But Graffiti is painted over, torn down, etc. Alot of graffiti is on the fringe of the public's perception, In that you find alot of it in places that most people do not go to, down alleys, under bridge overpasses, in train tunnels. It's art for those in the know.

Finding graffiti worth merit in the District of Columbia is quite an impossible task, unless you know where to look. Tags are everywhere, but quality flix are few and far between. The U St./ Cardozo area claims a great deal of the best graffiti downtown. I am looking for pics of Graffiti in DC and any info on them, locations, dates they were or are up and who it was done by. If you have any pics I would be glad to post them and give you credit. I would alsolike to start a listr of writers with example of their flix. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
