Biography : "Benjamin Brokaw, born Somerset Co., N.J., raised there and in Sussex Co., N.J. to about 1791, then to Fayette Co., Pa. from there to Washington Co., Pa. and finally to Jefferson County, Ohio, between 1798 and 1800.  In 1798 he purchased land in Ohio, near Cadiz, and in 1807 was party to a land transaction, in Jefferson Co. between himself and Jeremiah Ellis and wife, Mary, where he bought land for $200.00, which was a part of land bought by his father, George Brokaw.
      Benjamin Brokaw resided in Jefferson Co., and sometime before 1820, to Harrison Co.; from there, in 1828, to Morgan Co. Ohio near Neelyville.  In 1830 onto land in the Muskingum River Valley, near Big Ludlo.  In 1834 were living at Brokaw Hill, 1 mile east of Hooksburg. The home there was known as the Blockhouse Farm and was located on the sight of the Big Bottom Massacre. He held office of County Commissioner in both Harrison and Morgan Counties.  Was a blacksmith and made tools and farm implements.  At times he worked at the distilling of salt and in winters went flat-boating down the Ohio River, on down the Mississippi to New Orleans.  The home, or hillsite, where they had lived was later in possession of son George, and remained in the family to about 1845.  (Fam.
