Biography
: "daughter of William and Sarah (Swartwout) Custard, but although the
bp. of several other children of this couple have been recorded in the
D. Ch. at Walpack, N.J., that of Jane has never been found. (Swartwout
Chronicles, 1899, p. 591.) See the Swartwout Family records in the
Addenda for more on them - E.F. An interesting deed on file in Pike
Co. Pa, recites that Bernardus Swartwood of Delaware Twp., Northampton
(now Wayne) Co., Pa. devised all his lands among his eldest son Jacob Swartwood;
daughter Margaret, wife of Hermanus Cole; Sarah, wife of William Custard;
Mary, wife of James Mullen, and Bernardus Swartwood, his grandson, during
their lives...that the grant ended by the death of Sarah Custard and her
part descended to her heirs, - Job Burwell of Cross Creek Twp.
Washington Co., Pa. and Catherine, his wife, one of the heirs of Sarah
Custard; and to George Brokaw of Cadiz Twp., Jefferson Co., Ohio and Jane,
his wife, also an heir of Sarah Custard.
These parties conveyed land to William
Custard, June 9, 1810. (Pike Co. Deeds, v. 1, p. 291) In Deed
Bk. A., p. 87, at Court House Steubenville, Ohio, are these land transactions:
- "This indenture made 10 day of 1798, between George Humphrey and Elizabeth,
his wife, Twp. of Warren, of the one
part and George Brokaw of Washington Co., Pa., for sum of $201.15,
a tract of land being situated on the Pine Fork of Weycongussion Creek,
commonly know by the name of Indian Short Creek, being part of the eight
Twp., in the third range in the Twp. of Warren and Co. of Jefferson, Ohio:
Samuel Clark's land." (This is condensed) In a deed, Deed Bk. B.,
p. 143, of same, for Benjamin Brokaw, "This Indenture made 27 day of Feb.
1807," etc. This is included in rec. of No. 456-2. George Brokaw's
land patent was granted June 8, 1812, for the North East, 15:9:5, in Harrison
Co., O. (Ref. Bk. Hist., Bk. 94,687, v. 86, p. 80 of Som. and Hunterdon
Cos., N.J.) (NATL. 85216, D.A.R. Lin. Bk.), this must be his Bounty Land
for his War service.
Jane, bur. is buried in the Crabapple church cem. near Cadiz, Ohio,
her headstone is a verse -
"Soon shall I pass the gloomy vale,
Soon all my mortal powers must vail,
O may my departing breath,
His living kindness sing in death."
Jane was a member of the Moravian
Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and gravestone gives
date of death as Oct. 7, 1850; pension rec. of George states that she d.
Sept. 8, 1850, at 87 yrs., according to tombstone she was 98 y, 5 m. 6
dys., she was listed in 1850 as 98 yrs. The cemetery is not completely
surrounded by stripmining, yet is accessible to the public. (Refs.
