Biography
: "Obadiah Brokaw, born Jefferson Co., Ohio, lived in Harrison and Morgan
Counties, during his youth. When his folks moved to "Brokaw Hill,"
he helped in clearing the land. He learned the blacksmith trade, and, for
many years had his own shop at Hooksburg, on the Muskingum River; at one
time had a slat business, as, in those days, they evaporated salt from
water, and he took the salt, on a flat-boat, down the Muskingum to market.
In 1865 he sold his blacksmith shop and acquired the "Blockhouse Farm"
on Big Bottom, near Stockport, Ohio, about a mile South the town.
This was on the site of the Big Bottom massacre, by the Indians killing
the settlers.
